Best Starting Point for the College Search March 18, 2006 Carolyn Z. Lawrence (California, USA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
College Match is not the book to buy if you're looking for advice on how to write an essay (although it does provide some tips), college rankings or descriptions, or secrets about how to "game" the admissions system. It is, however, the best book out there for high school juniors just beginning the college search process because it provides a solid framework for figuring out just what exactly you want and need in a college experience. After you've worked through the tools in this book, you can then tackle the guidebooks, the rankings, and the college visits with confidence that you understand which type of school will fit you best. College Match brings the admissions process back where it should be: on YOU and finding the colleges that are best for YOUR needs, not just chasing after colleges that other people say are "best." This book is a true value for its price, and it is used by many private college counselors to help get their clients started on the road to college. It should be on every college hunter's bookshelf right from the beginning.
This is a workbook. July 22, 2009 Girlscout63 (midwest, USA) This book is for someone who needs a step by step process on "How on to chosse a school" It provides hands on worsheets that need to be filled out. It was exactly what my daughter needed. My daughter wrote on every worksheet. My only negative is that the print is small. The book is well written, clear and concise. If you have choosen a school or have narrowed it down to a few schools, then this is not the book for you.
Overall, very helpful June 6, 2000 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Finding and applying to the "right" colleges today is a process comparable to getting one's wisdom teeth pulled, sans Novocaine. For teenagers in pain everywhere, there's COLLEGE MATCH. This balanced and clear book takes one through a step-by-step process of discovering your interests and what you want in a college, then recommending how to go about finding those colleges and keeping multiple applications straight. (My favorite suggestion: Keep a wall chart with important dates (when to ask for an application, early decision, regular decision, postmark dates) for the colleges you want to apply to. I'm already planning the ritual sacrifice of yet another room in my house to the ubiquitous College Search.) Think of this book as a compass that can guide you through the endless maze of college guidebooks and directories out there, as well as the colleges themselves.
An Excelent Starting Point for the College Search March 15, 2007 M. Dudar (Illinois) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I wish I had come across this title earlier my daughter's search process. We probably could have saved a lot of money and time spent on college visits.
Most young people tend to follow the pack, that is, their peers, when thinking about college choices. Or worse, focus on the "name" schools because they've "heard" of them.
This book walks the student through a process of self-reflection that culminates in clearly identified preferences. My daughter came to realize that she needs to interact with faculty members to learn the subject matter which can be done best in a smaller school. Also that because she didn't have a clear career interest, a liberal arts school would afford her more options. The book has questionnaires and fill in the blanks and provides different points of view for the various scores.
It doesn't make recommedations for specific colleges, as some of the other reviewers have pointed out. But, more importantly, it provides a great framework for sifting through the huge volumes that are more commonly used for college search.
