Product Description Now in paperback, the New York Times bestseller-with over 91,000 copies in print-that takes you behind closed doors to see what really goes on in America's sororities ver wonder what sorority life is really like? In Pledged, bestselling author Alexandra Robbins goes undercover to expose the dark side of collegiate sisterhood-the psychological abuse, hazing rituals, and widespread body image disorders-while at the same time introducing us to many of the intelligent, successful women within its ranks. The result is a compelling sociological exploration of the powerful influence that these organizations wield over young women today. With its fly-on-the-wall voyeurism and remarkable insight, Pledged paints a sharp-eyed portrait of the intriguing and paradoxical world of modern-day sororities.

sadly accurate May 19, 2004 Heather Schulman (Maryland) 23 out of 27 found this review helpful
I am a currently graduating member of an NPC sorority at a large campus. I read this book out of curiosity, but I came out feeling like I'd just seen my life in the mirror. "Dress Checks",binge drinking, and "selling the sorority" were what I endured for several years. I did not encounter everything that Robbins talked about, like hazing and drug abuse, but I absolutely believe that this book is a fairly accurate representation of what goes on in these societies. I don't think that Robbins is trying to say that every sorority is like this, but the abuses she sees cannot be ignored in good conscience. Sororities will probably never change, but I hope that sisters will read this book and allow themselves to recognize their own lives in it.
It's not only about being Greek, it's about being female May 29, 2004 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
As Alexandra noted in the end - it's not a book merely about the sororities, it's a book about women treating women. Yes, there is hazning in other organizations, clubs and such, but since they're not exclusively female they wouldn't be so helpful in analyzing the group dynamics. I've been working with the Greek houses on a state school campus for a while, and The book is very true. I can see how someone who's Greek could be offended by it, - maybe you don't see the bigger picture? I personally didn't even think the book was to critisize the Greeks - just give an overview of a group often overlooked.
Fast Engaging Read July 14, 2004 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This was a terrific read, whether you're a member of a sorority or not (I am actually a member). MAybe some of the things that happen inthe book aren't true of every sorority but come on, we all know that this stuff does go on in some places. I was fascinated by this book by the stories that sounded familiar to me and the ones that didn't. It was better than fiction.
don't attack a book that doesn't attack you April 19, 2004 Betsy Rae (Mississippi) 21 out of 27 found this review helpful
Wow. WOW. What is wrong with you people?! Let me state up front that I read the book -- repeat, I actually READ THE BOOK -- and I thought it was incredible. It is a very fast read, plus I learned tons. And guess what -- I learned that not all sororities are bad, because that's obvious in the book. You ridiculous sorority members who post your reviews here without reading the book are only making yourselves look worse because you are judging Pledged with the same quick superficial judgments that you must use to judge people. Scary. Your idiotic "reviews" (if you can even call it that if you don't bother reading the book) play more into negative stereotypes of sorority sisters than this book does. Here's a review for you: I came away from Pledged thinking that with some changes in the system, I'd be ok with my nieces joining sororities -- the sorority charcters in the book, especially the 4 main ones, were exceptionally likable. BUT now that I am reading your nasty comments on amazon, I'm thinking that sororities with sisters like you aren't any place for good girls like my nieces. You should be ashamed of yourselves for attacking a book that doesn't attack you.
read it in one morning on the beach June 8, 2006 A.B.L. (up north) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
As an alumna of one of the largest international sororities, I approached this book with mixed feelings, having read many of the reviews on this site. What I learned is that you cant judge a book by its Amazon reviews because reviewers often take topics too personally and cant detach themselves and their personal experiences from the book. Many of the events in this book happened to me or my sisters, but thats besides the point. I thought that as a nonfiction book about sorority life, this book hit the nail on the head, and as for its readbility, I found it funny and entertaining in addition to smart and thought-provoking. All of us Greeks need to be familiar with this book if we are to continue to cater to the changing college environment.
